Aberdare Cables brought the excitement of its 80th Anniversary celebrations to the vibrant province of KwaZulu-Natal for the second leg of its commemorative journey. The choice of location was both meaningful and symbolic KZN became home to the company’s second major operation in 1948, just two years after Aberdare’s founding in Port Elizabeth in 1946. The carefully curated sequence of festivities paid tribute to this enduring legacy, while also honouringthe invaluable contributions of customers, government partners, and stakeholders who have shaped Aberdare’s story over the decades. The atmosphere resonated with pride and nostalgia, capturing the spirit of progress and collaboration that continues to define the company’s presence in the region.

The celebrations began with a meticulously organised factory tour at Aberdare’s spotless Pietermaritzburg facility on 29 July 2026. Despite a gentle rain, the welcoming team greeted arriving guests with branded umbrellas, creating a warm and thoughtful first impression. Visitors were guided through the state-of-the-art production lines, where they observed the intricate cable-manufacturing process from raw materials to finished products. The factory’s sparkling cleanliness drew admiration, with many guests expressing astonishment at the high standards of order and hygiene; some even playfully wondered if the pristine conditions were specially prepared for the occasion. The tour left customers with a deeper appreciation for Aberdare’s commitment to excellence and operational discipline.

The second leg of KZN’s 80th Anniversary celebration unfolded on 30 July 2026 at the breathtaking, ocean-facing The Capital Zimbali resort. With its sweeping coastal views and elegant ambience, the venue set the perfect stage for a truly memorable evening. The meticulously planned event impressed guests with its seamless organisation and attention to detail, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. True to local tradition, the festivities began promptly, exemplifying the renowned punctuality of KZN’s people. Upon arrival, guests were greeted by the enchanting sounds of Maremo the Violin, whose live performance in the foyer created an atmosphere of sophistication and anticipation as attendees mingled and awaited the grand opening of the event doors.

The charismatic Mr Lawrance Maleka took the stage as master of ceremonies, immediately energising the room with his warm welcome and playful encouragement for everyone to relax and enjoy the festivities. His witty banter and engaging presence kept the crowd entertained, setting an upbeat and friendly tone for the evening. As the program commenced, he introduced Mr Mishack Matla, the MSD Executive Director, who captivated the audience with a succinct yet impactful history of Aberdare Cables. Matla’s address included gracious acknowledgements, extending heartfelt welcomes to the Mayor of uMsunduziMunicipality, the Mayor of eThekwini Municipality, Acting Chinese Consul in Durban, valued customers, and distinguished stakeholders, reinforcing the company’s deep community ties.

Aberdare Cables CEO, Mr Jian Ken Wang, delivered a heartfelt keynote address that resonated deeply with the audience. Speaking sincerely, he likened the Aberdare community—including customers, partners, and guests—to an extended family, underscoring how integral each stakeholder is to the company’s continued success. His words radiated warmth and gratitude as he welcomed everyone and encouraged them to remain part of the Aberdare journey for the next 80 years and beyond. The sense of unity and shared purpose was palpable throughout the room.

Adding to the evening’s significance, Acting Chinese Consul in Durban, Ms Miao Miao, took the podium as guest speaker. The evening’s entertainment reached its peak with a dazzling performance by the dynamic Afro Divas. Their electrifying stage presence and rich, harmonious vocals captivated the audience, filling the venue with vibrant energy and irresistible rhythms. Each song was delivered with passion and flair, prompting guests to sway, clap, and cheer. The Afro Divas left a lasting impression, transforming the celebration into an unforgettable musical experience that had everyone talking long after the final note faded.
Factory Operations and Technical Executive Mr Wayne Munilall delivered a gracious vote of thanks. He eloquently recognised the organising team’s dedication, whose meticulous planning and hard work made the event possible. Munilall extended heartfelt appreciation to every guest who accepted the invitation, emphasising the shared pride and sense of accomplishment in celebrating Aberdare’s 80-year legacy together.
