Sishen South Project: Kolomela Mine (2010)

The Sishen South project, to develop the Kolomela Mine, has made major strides to date. Kolomela Mine, which means “to dig deeper or further to persevere”, is an open pit truck-and-shovel operation with a development cost of R8,5 billion.

Aberdarians will be proud to know that Kumba Iron Ore appointed Aberdare to principal supplier of cable for the project. The cable was stored and delivered by our Welkom branch. Deliveries for the project commenced in March 2010 to contractors Stefanutti (Apollo) and B&W. To date, 42,151m of cable to the value of R11,581,515 was used by Stefanutti while B&W have utilised 222,164 m valued at R10,321,152…a total of R21,902,677.

Kolomela Mine is expected to be completed by mid-2012, with full production in 2013. It’s pleasing to know that our cables will be powering up the mine!
