BHP Billiton has undertaken the construction of a 16-million tons per month coal washing facility at the Phola processing plant. The plant will service coal from two mines, namely BHP Billiton Energy Coal South Africa’s (Becsa’s) Klipspruit and coal-miner Anglo Coal’s new mine, Zondagsfontein
The processing plant is a joint venture with Anglo Coal and specialist engineering company, DRA Mineral Projects has been awarded the project. To date, Aberdare has supplied millions worth of the cable to the project and majority of the cable needed was medium voltage 22kV XLPE cable.
The first coal from the project is anticipated in February 2009, while completion of the project is expected in April 2009.
